Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto 6 has been pushed back to 2026, but a remaster of GTA 4 might be in development and could be released relatively soon. This information comes from tipster Tez2, who shared on the GTA forums that a port of GTA 4 for modern consoles might be in the works and could launch before the end of 2025.
Tez2 mentioned that someone at Rockstar hinted at the possibility of the IV port and suggested that it could be released in 2025. This source also noted that the potential existence of a GTA 4 port might explain why the Liberty City Preservation Project mod was recently taken down.
Tez2 further stated that if Rockstar’s plans stay on track, a Max Payne 3 port could also be developed and released after the GTA 4 port. Tez2 was answering a question about bringing these games to modern platforms, which could include PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. It is unclear if the Switch or Switch 2 would be possible platforms.
While none of this is confirmed, it is known that Remedy is working on remakes of Max Payne 1 and 2 in collaboration with Rockstar Games, and the release dates for those games are still unknown.
GTA 4 is set in Liberty City, which represents New York City, and follows the life and criminal activities of European immigrant Niko Bellic. Since Liberty City is the hometown of GTA 6’s character Lucia, a re-release of GTA 4 before the launch of GTA 6 in 2026 could be appropriate.
